Last of the Summer Triathlon, Holmfirth 2015

At 8.00am on Sunday morning, 4th October 2015, with a grey and overcast sky, the first of 130+ swimmers started the first leg of their sprint triathlon at the Last of the Summer Tri in Holmfirth.

By the time the first elite triathletes had finished their swim, bike and run, the sun had started to shine through and the rest of the competitors were making their way through this multi-disciplined sporting event.

Holmfirth’s triathlon takes place twice a year, and is a sprint distance triathlon made up of 400 metres swim in a 20 metre pool, followed by an 24 kilometre cycle route. The run which is just under 6km, completes the triathlon at the swimming pool and sands recreation facilities in Holmfirth.

Joint organisers Dave Armitage and Simon Jones, were delighted at the response from competitors after the event on their Facebook page. The official technical report from Triathlon England, who were present on the day, had this to say “A real grass roots event which was well organised and delivered, just the sort of event I enjoy supporting.”

Steve Marshall, from Triathlon England continued, “Lots of positive comments were made by the athletes. They commented positively about the overall organisation and the support received. Many of the novices said they would be back to take part in future races. Excellent atmosphere.”

Dave Armitage, Race Director of Last of the Summer Tri said “Without our competitors, our sponsors and partners; The Butchers Arms, Albion Cycles, Holme Valley Sports Injury Clinic and Triathlon Box, all the marshals from Holme Valley Mountain Rescue, the volunteers, Purple Dog first aid, all our friends and family, we couldn’t put on one of the best local triathlons in our area. It’s down to everyone who made it such a success.”

Winning times recorded for the first male, were Paul Robson in a total time of 1:16:09 and the first female Anna Hobbs in a total time of 1:30:36. They both get first place prizes of Triathlon Boxes from entrepreneur John Paul Ashton, together with vouchers from local Holmfirth main sponsors The Butchers Arms and Albion Cycles.

First place local athletes Ben Humphreys and Emily Harris received sports massage sessions from local business owner and team GB triathlete Jonny McLean’s Holme Valley Sports Injury Clinic.

Team Phoenix (pictured) a local team of athletes from the Honley Phoenix Squash Club managed an impressive team relay effort in a combined time of 1:19:24 putting them in 4th overall place. Carl Tinson (m) did the 400m swim followed by Gary Culverwell (l) on the bike for 24km and finally Bradley Bedford (r) for the 5.7km run.

Simon Jones, co-organiser of the event said “On the day, we raised over £250 through the sale of teas, coffees and home-made cakes for our chosen charity, Holme Valley Mountain Rescue, who were our marshals and volunteers. They always do a great job and support us at our events every year. We also had Steve, Helen and crew from Purple Dog Training supporting us for the first time with first aid and also helped with marshalling the event. They’re such a great team, and never failed to smile and help out and we’re looking forward to working with them in future events.”

Holmfirth Harriers Mark Buckingham to Compete in the 2014 Last of the Summer Tri

We’re really really (really!) pleased to announce that Mark Buckingham will be joining us and competing at the Last of the Summer Tri on 12th October 2014. How cool is that?

Mark Buckingham Holmfirth Harriers

Mark who is a member of and trains with our friends at Holmfirth Harriers also trains with the Brownlee Brothers in Leeds. And if you didn’t already know, he recently won his first British Elite Triathlon for the Olympic Distance in June 2014 after previously being British Elite Duathlon Champion. So he’s got the creds then!

OK, whilst Mark is highly likely to win the Last of the Summer Tri, he won’t be taking all the glory from the two hotly tipped contenders going head to head; local lad Jonny Mclean and Hamish Shaw of Knutsford Tri Club.

Mark is sponsored by Yonda which is run by Angus Greenwood who some of you may know from Holmfirth Harriers.

First of the Holmfirth 10k a resounding success

Summer Tri Series organisers Dave Armitage and Simon Jones would like to say a big thank you to all entrants who made our first 10k race such a success today.

The weather stayed good if a little windy and followed some of the most stunning scenery on the tops of Holmfirth starting from Hade Edge.

The race set off from Hade Edge down Greave Road towards Rowan Yarns at Washpit Mills before heading up the steep cobbles of Green Lane on to Cartworth Road up towards the cricket club. Turning left onto White Gate Road takes you up and past Coddy’s Farm Shop before heading up the long slog of Linshaws Road and eventually onto the aptly names Bare Bones Road. A final left turn onto Dunford Road and it’s all thankfully downhill to the finish line in the recreation ground at Hade Edge.

First over the line was Oliver Carter from Ackworth Road Runners in a new course record time of 00:41:24 followed closely by John Watkins in a time of 00:43:30. First woman over the line was Ann Bonner is a time of 00:57.35. Full results can be found here.

Commenting on the race Ann Bonner said “For such a small event with only 19 runners, the atmosphere was great and it was lovely to be part of the first Holmfirth 10k from Summer Tri Series. I can imagine there will be a lot more wanting to take part next year and it would be great to see more female competitors.”

Joint organiser Simon Jones said “Thankfully the weather was good today and not as hot as yesterday. We did a sighting lap on Saturday morning and put the route signs up later on and the heat was getting quite unbearable.”

Joint organiser Dave Armitage said “We didn’t expect such a good turnout today. Word spread through Holmfirth Harriers which we’re very grateful for and through local word of mouth, so thanks to everyone for making our first 10k such a success.”

“It was also really great to see Rob Kelly take part too. Rob organises the Honley 10k Trail Run which is a great event which takes place on 23rd August 2014 at 11:00 am. We’re looking forward to racing in this one and not having to be the organisers this time!” said Dave.

“Thanks again to everyone who entered and the support from friends and family. We hope to see you at our next event on 12th October 2014, Last of the Summer Tri 2014.”

Holmfirth 10k Road Race

Organisers of the Last of the Summer Tri are pleased to announce the inaugural Holmfirth 10k road race will take place on 27th July 2014.

“We’re expecting about 100 runners of all abilities to start at 10.00am on Sunday from the recreation ground at Hade Edge, Holmfirth” said race organiser Dave Armitage. “The race itself will last for about an hour and half and all competitors and spectators should be gone from the area by 1.00pm” he continued.

“The run itself will start from the recreation ground, then turning right down into Choppards, then up to Cartworth Moor, over to Dunford Road and back into Hade Edge recreation ground to the finish line” said Simon Jones, joint race organiser. “It’s the first time this route has been set as a 10k road race and will prove challenging to all abilities” he continued. “I’d be surprised if anyone breaks the 40 minute barrier on this race because of the hilly nature of the route” he said. “But it will be worth it when you get to the top of Cartworth Moor and see the views down the Holme Valley. Hopefully we’ll have some good weather to show off the natural beauty of the area.”

The event has been authorised and approved by Kirklees council and Kirklees highways and car parking will have a minimal impact on the village say the organisers.

The organisers have said that the event is an ideal opportunity for local residents to make it a memorable one and are encouraging anyone who wants to set up stalls to raise money for charity to get in touch. “Our own food and drink stall will be raising money for our chosen charity; The Holme Valley Mountain Rescue team on the day, but we’re more than happy to see others getting involved” said Dave, “just give us a call or drop us a line on Facebook” he suggested.

“We’re already planning for October’s event; Last of the Summer Tri which takes place on the 28th September 2014. We’ve also got some other races planned this year so keep an eye on the website and our Facebook page” said Armitage.
